Employment gap

The vision that someone will ask about your employment gap during a job interview can be super stressful. However, you can get yourself prepared and present this gap as valuable for your potential employer.

Employment gap

In your professional experience, there might be some periods without employment, for which there may be many reasons. Sometimes this is because you want to gain some new qualifications, for family reasons or just because you are not able to find your new, dream job. The vision that someone will ask about this during a job interview can be super stressful. However, you can get yourself prepared and present this gap as valuable for your potential employer. We recommend your start with your CV.

The strategy that you end up opting for depends on the situation you find yourself in currently:

# You are in a gap period right now

The question you should ask yourself is this: have you been involved in any additional projects? Maybe you have finished some interesting training courses? If so, then this is worth mentioning, but under one condition – this information should be relevant to the role you are applying for. Remember, space in your CV is a precious commodity and we should use it only to share info that may be interesting for the prospective employer (we wrote about this here). What should you do if you spent all this time relaxing? Let’s just focus on your previous position and try to be specific when describing your previous responsibilities.

# Your gap occurred in the past, but right now you are employed

In this situation, there is no need to focus too much on this area – you are now working and this is the most important for your potential employer. Let’s shift focus and describe what you have achieved in your current role. What are you responsible for? What successes you can share? Leave any eventual explanations for the actual interview; there is no need to write about it in your resume.
